NEW THEORY ON BINGE DRINKING

The rise in binge drinking by the young is a “fashion phenomenon” in which social networking, rather than the influence of key individuals, spreads the behaviour, according to a new study.
The research by Durham University and Volterra Consulting suggests that binge drinking reduction strategies based on the theory that a small number of people influence others may not succeed.
Instead, the research indicates that the “small world” model – based on interaction between overlapping friendship groups in which drinkers copy their associates' behaviour – underlies the growth in binge drinking.
This, say the authors, poses challenges for policymakers trying to tackle the problem, since they would need tap into a complex friendship networks.
